St Patrick’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic buildings in New York City. It is a Gothic Revival cathedral built by James Renwick Jr in 1858 and was considered complete in 1888. The estimated cost of construction would be $32,875,114 today. Most of the funding came from impoverished Irish immigrants. The cathedral was originally built to replace the old cathedral, which is now known as The Basilica of St Patrick’s Old Cathedral, as the parish had outgrown it. Construction began in 1858 and continued until it was put on hold in the early 1860s as a result of the Civil War and a lack of funds. Work resumed in 1866. As a way to preserve funds and reduce weight, everything below the capitals are marble, but the capitals and above are plaster, wood, and lath that has been painted to look like marble.
